Backing Britain is back. Made in Group is urging the UK government to debate and act upon: addressing concerns related to safeguarding manufacturing capacity, addressing concerns related to ownership of British businesses, and appointing a Minister for manufacturing.

Ahead of the UK general election, set to take place across Britain on 4th July 2024, The Backing Britain campaign seeks to enhance supply chain competence within government, ultimately driving national prosperity and security through a robust industrial sector. UK Industry leaders are taking action now by signing the pledge, including Allan Joyce, Managing Director of Balmoral Tanks. Allan said: "Backing Britain is making sure that we create a future for manufacturing”.

With a new government taking center stage in the coming weeks, Made in Group, Including Made in the Midlands and Made in Yorkshire, is taking action. The Backing Britain pledge encourages manufacturers to sign an open letter that will be sent to every MP. On 5th December 2024 during Made’s annual Westminster trip, the manifesto by manufacturers and the signed pledges will be presented to the government. To make a lasting impact, the organisation is encouraging every UK industry leader and professional to sign the pledge. With 100K signatures, the manifesto will be discussed in parliament and closer to taking real action on the matter.

Allan Joyce has been Managing Director of Balmoral Tanks in Rotherham, Yorkshire since its inception in 2018. Whilst the company experienced a difficult time bouncing back from the covid 19 pandemic, the renowned manufacturer of tanks is seeing a buoyancy in revenue and exports now, despite Brexit-related regulations. “Last year we exported to 54 countries and our export revenue has grown by 88% in the last two years, ” Allan said.

Despite this resilience, which can be witnessed across the UK manufacturing sector, Allan believes the industry isn't represented at the government level properly - regardless of making up around 23% of the UK’s overall GDP. “Manufacturing is resilient and fundamentally important to the UK’s future. I find it amazing that we have to fight so hard to get government representation. Despite this, I think manufacturing in the UK is still strong.”

“The minister for manufacturing in question needs to be someone who is taking care of threats, risks, and opportunities with real research and development (R&D),” Allan added. He went on to say that it is vital that whoever represents the sector must believe “manufacturing is key to the UK’s future and who is also passionate about it.” With manufacturing employing around 2.6 million people, generating £200 billion every year for the economy, and creating over 40% of the country’s exports Allan begs the question: “Why shouldn't there be representation at government level? It is incredible what manufacturing businesses generate for this country.”

When it comes to what Backing Britain means to manufacturers - supporting people, the economy, and the legacy of UK manufacturing is high on many people's lists. As around 43% of spend contributes to R&D in manufacturing, Allan believes Backing Britain means creating a future that allows businesses to take advantage of technological advancements. “Backing Britain for me is making sure that we create a future for the sector that allows us to take advantage of opportunities that create learning and development through processes and people, aligning education with the needs of the skill sets of tomorrow that are undoubtedly going to involve technology.”

Balmoral Tanks doubles Thurnscoe manufacturing capability

As Balmoral Tanks continues to develop its business around the world the company has been expanding its manufacturing facility in Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, after taking occupation only 12 months ago.

The extension, which will effectively double the production area, will house a new manufacturing line for a product designed to complement the company’s existing portfolio. The new range will provide the international market with a UK manufactured option to compete with products made in the USA, Germany and China.

Balmoral feels the £10m investment reflects the UK’s manufacturing heritage which is still widely recognised as world leading as illustrated during a recent business trip to South America. Company personnel asked the client why Balmoral Tanks was their preferred supplier as, logistically, they may have been better off purchasing from the USA. The reason; Made in Britain!

Jonathan Smith, sales director, said: “We are keenly focused on product lines that can be improved or developed, complementary or novel.

“However, one thing that must be the backbone of any product offering is customer service. Great service is undoubtedly a ‘differentiator’ when keeping ahead of the competition.

New appointments strengthen Balmoral Tanks’ global ambition

The company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Aberdeen-based engineering and manufacturing business, Balmoral Group, has built a reputation for providing not only the highest quality of product but also unrivalled levels of customer service on a global basis.

To further strengthen its market-leading position it has announced two senior appointments – one at each of its manufacturing locations.

Gary Lockwood becomes the new operations director at Balmoral Tanks’ Llantrisant facility in South Wales while Cheong Tsang moves into a similar role in Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire.

Balmoral Tanks strikes Canadian partnership

UK-based Balmoral Tanks, a leading tank design and manufacturing company, has announced a strategic partnership with Canadian company Storage & Transfer Technologies (STT).

STT, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Carmeuse, designs, procures and provides post-installation support of dry bulk chemical processing systems and bulk material solutions as well as liquid storage tanks and systems.

“Following extensive research into the Canadian market it was clear that we needed a strong partner with broad experience of the storage tank industry”, said Simon Scott, Balmoral’s export sales director.

“With over 40 years’ experience and in-depth knowledge of bolted tank supply and construction, STT stood out as the strongest candidate and we welcome them to the ‘Balmoral Growth Initiative’”.

With offices in Ontario and British Columbia, STT will cover the full Canadian market with local sales teams, project management, technical and installation support. They will also operate in other select regions for specialised projects.

Jan Arciszewski, general manager of STT, said: “Balmoral’s reputation for providing the very best product quality and unrivalled customer service made this an easy decision for us and we look forward to bringing Balmoral Tanks’ accredited products to our local markets.

Expansion strategy relies on personnel commitment

Balmoral Tanks, the Thurnscoe-based tank design and manufacturing company, is doubling the size of its manufacturing facility with a new production line going live later in 2019.

The new product line will further extend the company’s portfolio which is targeted worldwide, from Argentina to Australia, Scandinavia to South Africa as well as the home UK market.

With such expansion comes a requirement for high quality and committed employees across many disciplines, from accountancy to HR, sales and engineering to production and logistics. Balmoral is seen is one of the key employers in South Yorkshire and its recruitment policy is one of rigour making it one of the most sought-after places of employment in the region.

Thurnscoe-based tank design and manufacturing company, Balmoral Tanks, is highly respected around the globe as it carries drinking water product approvals for the Far East, Africa, Middle East and Europe and will soon receive NSF61 approval for the US market. In addition to drinking water approvals Balmoral offers LPCB, FM and AWWA compliant designs.

The company, a division of £100m engineering outłt BaHmoraH Group, has earned a global reputation for providing an industry-leading portfolio of liquid storage and treatment products including epoxy coated and concrete tanks and has installations on major projects across Europe, South America, the Middle and Far East.

Balmoral Tanks’ new £10m purpose designed factory opened in January 2018 and houses a state of the art epoxy coating line and in-line shot blasting as well as the latest laser cutting technology and fabrication facilities.

Think tank: Investing in inclusive learning and development to drive global growth

Yet more Made in Group members are signing up to the Made Equal Employer Pledge, committing to adopt and inclusive approach to recruiting and retaining diverse talent as the scheme’s momentum grows.

Bold ambition

One of the latest signatories is Balmoral Tanks, a world-leading design and manufacturing company producing a comprehensive range of tank products. Civil engineering, firefighting, potable/non-potable water, anaerobic digestion, wastewater, desalination and drainage are key applications for the company’s products. Balmoral derives almost 65% of its revenues from exporting to more than 55 companies around the world, and the company has bold ambitions to reach even more customers in new markets over the coming months and years.

In order to sustain this level of growth, the organisation understands the need to invest in diverse talent. Allan Joyce, managing director explains: “We are manufacturers, so it needs to be right first time. We’ve sponsored recent recruits into our engineering team because their engineering skills and backgrounds complement the team that's already here.”

Talent doesn’t discriminate

Whereas most people would traditionally associate the word ‘apprenticeship’ with youth employment, Balmoral has opted to avoid stereotyping workers, employing apprentices of different ages, not just straight out of school but also career changers. Talent doesn’t discriminate, and neither does Balmoral.

Balmoral’s HR Advisor, Nicola Wagstaff points out: “We have a number of apprentices with us of different ages, so it doesn't matter if they're straight from school or they're having a career change. We’re flexible about the sort of people we bring into the business so there’s a good mix of skills and ideas.

“We’ve currently got three apprentices working in design and one working in maintenance. We’re hoping to take on two fabricator welders next year but it’s a difficult area to recruit into. We’ll potentially recruit into some admin positions as well.”

Gender balance on the agenda

Gender balance is also high on the agenda at Balmoral too. The bigger the talent pool, the better the chances of hiring the best talent. Nicola is optimistic about the potential to attract and retain more women into traditionally male-dominated roles:
“In our Design and Engineering Department, at one point everyone was male, but now we have two women in there. One started off in 2015 by doing a week-long work placement with us. She's been involved with the business ever since, and in the last couple of years she’s completed her degree apprenticeship. Her skillset and knowledge are incredible. The things that she knows and can do are just amazing. We've got another woman who started with us this year who I’m sure will be equally as impressive.”

Investing in people

Balmoral has recently welcomed a new cohort of ten staff into their Leadership Academy, which they run every year. Whether they’re based in Balmoral’s site in Thurnscoe, outside Barnsley, or their site in Llantrisant, South Wales, Allan takes a keen interest in their participation in the programme, speaking with them all as part of their induction programme.

Balmoral is proud to have achieved its Investors in People accreditation too, achieving ‘Silver’ award level status in its most recent audit last year, a feat that only 23% of companies achieve. But they’re not resting on their laurels, taking part in IIP’s recent Making Work Better Conference in pursuit of further progress.
One strand of the plan is to put in place rigorous training and development for the people who conduct interviews in the business to embed an inclusive approach and eliminate the risks of unconscious bias to ensure there is a level playing field for all applicants.

Allan sums up Balmoral’s approach when he reflects back on the reasons why the organisation first became members of Made in Yorkshire:
“When we first signed up to Made in Yorkshire we did so because the membership values resonated with our own core values in the business. I strongly believe in treating everybody on merit and our decision to sign up the Made Equal Employer Pledge only serves to reinforce this. I’d strongly encourage other members to join us in signing up.”

UK manufacturing company, Balmoral Tanks, has seen two of its operating arms surpass 1000 days each with no Lost Time Incidents (LTIs).

Balmorals dedicated installation teams have carried out more than 1000 days of safe site work while the companys rotomoulding team has achieved similar status.

Bob Irwin, health and safety manager with the company, said: We work extremely hard promoting and encouraging safe practices. This is done not only with our own teams but that of the sites we visit on a daily basis.

Its great to have reached this milestone however our aim is to continue operating as one of the most highly trained and qualified site installation teams in the sector across the globe.

At the companys dedicated rotational moulding facility in Aberdeen, production manager Derek Weir said: I am delighted the team has reached such a significant milestone in terms of safe working practices.

We manage a sizeable rotomoulding operation that manufactures a huge amount of products of varying size and complexity. This achievement is testament to the diligence and hard work of our team and those around them.

Operating from three UK facilities Balmoral Tanks provides water/wastewater storage solutions to a range of sectors including public water, wastewater, anaerobic digestion, fire fighting and numerous processing applications.

We set ourselves apart through a commitment to safety, customer focus, added value engineering and personnel development. I was delighted to present the teams with mementoes marking their achievements, added Allan Joyce, the companys managing director.

As you may know, Colin Shaw, Balmoral Tanks Exports Sales Director, has been in post since 2003 and retired on 31 March 2017. Colin, a highly respected member of the global water industry community, has brought his knowledge, experience and network to Balmoral and we are very grateful for his valuable contribution over the years. Our relationship with Colin will continue as our paths are sure to cross in the years ahead.

Simon Scott, another well known face in the tanks industry, has taken over the role of Exports Sales Director and will oversee the department from 1 April 2017.

Simon has a wealth of knowledge and has worked in the tanks industry for over 23 years holding posts in the UK, Middle East and Far East as well as working throughout Europe, Africa and the Americas. Colin and Simon have spent the last six months working together to ensure a smooth transition and Simon is ready to support you.

World-renowned design and manufacturing

On Wednesday 15^th November 2023, Made in Yorkshire, Yorkshire’s leading manufacturing network, ran a highly successful best practice networking event at Balmoral Tank’s Thurnscoe site. Balmoral is a world-renowned design and manufacturing company that provides unique turnkey services spanning civils groundwork, tank design and manufacture, installation, commissioning and technical aftersales services.

The event brought together more than 50 industry professionals, experts, and key stakeholders to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and foster collaboration within the Yorkshire manufacturing sector and beyond. The event was also attended by members of Made in the Midlands, who were keen to meet with their Yorkshire equivalents to discuss potential new collaborations.

Promoting innovation, sustainability and growth

With a focus on promoting innovation, sustainability, and growth, the Made in Yorkshire best practice networking event aimed to provide a platform for manufacturers to learn from each other's successes, challenges, and best practices. The event opened with a networking breakfast, and was followed by a welcome from Made in Group’s CEO, Jason Pitt who addressed the delegates:

“It gives me great pleasure to see so many familiar faces, but also new members, here today in South Yorkshire. Balmoral Tanks’ facilities are second to none and I’m extremely grateful to Allan Joyce and his team for throwing open their doors to fellow Made in Group members so we can all learn more about their exceptional achievements.”

Allan Joyce, Balmoral Tanks’ managing director, went on to deliver a keynote session, covering the business and the way it delivers the solutions it offers to clients both in the UK and around the globe. Allan discussed the culture at the company, its customer-focused and quality-assured values, as well as its numerous certifications, including BSI Kitemark for Service Standards (BS477 & BS ISO 10002), and Investors in People’s coveted Silver accreditation. Allan said:

“We were one of the first companies to join Made in Yorkshire and it was initially about brand building. When it started out, I thought: Here's a great vehicle for us to raise the profile of Balmoral as a company. And it's worked.

After Allan’s session, the floor was given over to the Made in Yorkshire community. Its patrons that attended included Control Energy Costs, Partners PR and E3R. Members attending were drawn from a diverse range of manufacturers with specialisms including powder coating, electroplating, laser cutting and many more. There were also details shared about up-and-coming commercial opportunities.

Attendees emphasised the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange in driving the region's manufacturing sector forward. The engaging discussion sparked lively debates and provided valuable insights for attendees.

Access-all-areas

Following the presentation section of the event, delegates were split into six groups and given an access-all-areas tour of the facilities, allowing them to witness firsthand the cutting-edge technologies and the processes employed, as well as giving them the opportunity to speak with team members and learn about all aspects of Balmoral’s international operations.

The Made in Yorkshire best practice networking event at the Thurnscoe site served as a testament to the region's manufacturing prowess and the commitment of industry professionals to continuous improvement. By fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and promoting innovation, the event played a crucial role in strengthening the Yorkshire manufacturing sector and positioning it for future success.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sam Sleight, Membership Development Manager at Made in Yorkshire, back to our site in Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire. As one of Made in Yorkshire’s longest-standing members, we were proud to share the latest developments at Balmoral Tanks – and reflect on the journey that’s brought us to where we are today.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve grown our turnover from £30 million to £47 million, and we’re now working towards an ambitious but achievable goal of reaching £100 million within the next five. One of our proudest milestones – as highlighted by our Managing Director, Allan Joyce – is being the only manufacturer in Britain to achieve the BSI Service Excellence Kitemark accreditation. It’s an honour that recognises our organisation-wide commitment to delivering outstanding customer service, and one that places us alongside just two other organisations to have renewed this prestigious standard: Luton Airport and Scottish Power.

During his visit, Sam toured our factory with Manufacturing Manager, Matt Canham, who talked him through some of the major changes since we last hosted a Made in Yorkshire Factory Tour in 2023. Chief among them is our investment in a Centriblast shot-blasting line – a near-£1 million addition that has revolutionised our surface preparation process, increasing consistency, efficiency, and quality output; key to our 20% increase in first time passes.

We are also continuing to expand its global footprint, with a brand-new facility soon to be up and running. While a few final steps are still being completed before production can officially begin, we are eagerly preparing to unveil Balmoral Tanks' first overseas manufacturing site. This project has been several years in the making and marks a significant milestone for the business. The new site will be led by a long-serving member of the UK team who is relocating to take on the role – a clear reflection of Balmoral’s strong commitment to nurturing talent from within and providing meaningful career progression opportunities.

People remain at the heart of everything we do. Our Leadership Academy, which has been running since 2011, continues to provide structured, ILM-accredited development for emerging leaders across the business. It’s played a key role in shaping the careers of many team members – including our Finance Director, Natalie Chappell, who also joined the discussion with Sam during his visit.

We’re seeing strong growth across a number of key markets that align with global infrastructure and sustainability goals. During Sam’s visit, Sales Director Jon Smith and Export Sales Director Simon Scott spoke about where we’re seeing the most momentum – from anaerobic digestion and carbon capture to onshore fish farming and green energy storage.

Simon also highlighted a particularly exciting opportunity in the data centre market, where demand for water is substantial – with a single facility using up to 5 million litres per day for cooling. With more than 12,000 data centres now operating globally, the need for reliable and scalable liquid storage solutions has never been greater – and we’re proud that our tanks are increasingly being selected to support this critical infrastructure.

All of this is driven by our five-year strategy, built on four core pillars: ESG, productivity through innovation, service excellence, and people development. These guide our decisions, shape our culture, and ensure we continue building a sustainable, successful future – while staying true to our Yorkshire roots.

Backing Britain is about investment in facilities, people and product

With over £20 million of investment in new facilities and software, South Yorkshire-based Balmoral Tanks, and its Managing Director, Allan Joyce, believes that Backing Britain is all about investment in facilities, staff and, ultimately, a strong product.

In terms of a robust market offering, the company introduced two new product lines: “We design and manufacture highly specialist products at our Thurnscoe facility. The first is Balmoral epoxy coated tanks and the second Balmoral glass fused to steel (GFS) tanks." Allan explained that the glass product line is expected to move into full production by the end of May.

Yet the investment doesn’t just include operational facilities, but also the ability of all Balmoral Tanks’ employees with the company encouraging its staff to learn new skills. Speaking, Allan said: “At the heart of all of this will be a strong leadership team in our succession plan which is tangible and visible, and so we continue with the investment in our Leadership Academy."

“The final piece of the jigsaw, launched in March, is ‘BALANCE’. A competency-based online training system which links everyone in the business across our five UK locations. The Leadership Academy team came up with the name which stands for (Balmoral Academy for Learning And Nurturing Continual Excellence). We love it. Everybody can log in, and we're starting with what we call compliance competency; safety, quality, and environmental. Everybody's got to complete at least two modules by the end of May with the ultimate objective to make sure that every job we have in this company will have a competency-based assessment on what their job role is all about.

We are preparing and positioning the company for an exciting future," Mr Joyce concluded.

Balmoral Tanks eyes green energy revolution

Balmoral Group’s storage tanks business is tapping into the growing green energy market with new products following a £20 million investment at its base in Yorkshire.

The company said its new range of bulk liquid storage tanks would support the “anaerobic digestion green energy revolution”.

Anaerobic digestion turns plant-derived materials, known as biomass, into gas for heating and power. The resultant gas is called methane or biogas and is created by bacteria which digest biomass and produce methane as a by-product.

Allan Joyce, Balmoral Tanks managing director, said: “Bulk liquid storage tanks used in the anaerobic digestion sector require well designed and engineered products.

“Exporting products around the world demands quality and performance levels of a standard that is built around a zero defects philosophy.

“Achieving such performance levels takes investment, foresight and a willingness to believe in what your market research is telling you”,

Balmoral Tanks also makes tanks for the water, wastewater markets.

Mr Joyce added: “Successfully delivering to the WWT sector in the UK for many years, Balmoral now exports to a significant number of markets that have established a renewable energy sector as part of their future infrastructure plans.”

Balmoral Tanks expands with pipework acquisition

Balmoral Tanks has expanded into the pipe arena with the acquisition of Servomac Ltd, the Chesterfield-based pipework specialist, for an undisclosed sum.

Established in 1999, Servomac designs, fabricates, installs and tests pipework systems for the water, biogas and renewable energy sectors and will continue trading under that name as a division of Balmoral Tanks Ltd.

Balmoral Tanks, part of Aberdeen-based Balmoral Group Holdings Ltd, has earned a global reputation for providing an industry-leading portfolio of liquid storage and treatment products including epoxy coated and concrete tanks and has installations on major projects spanning Europe, North and South America, the Middle and Far East.

The companys new £10m purpose designed factory in South Yorkshire opened in January 2018 and houses a brand new epoxy coating line and in-line shot blasting as well as the latest laser cutting technology and fabrication facilities.

Allan Joyce, managing director at Balmoral Tanks, said: This acquisition provides a platform to extend our product offering to our global client base.

Having worked with Servomac on a number of large projects the synergy between the two companies has been striking. I am delighted that the team at Servomac will continue to run the business on a day to day basis as their knowledge and experience is highly valued.

Enterprising Barnsley, the economic development arm of Barnsley Council, has worked with Balmoral Tanks Ltd to help the company expand and invest more than £10 million in a new purpose-built factory in Barnsley.

Balmoral Tanks is a leading manufacturer of water/wastewater storage and processing products. It has a global footprint spanning Europe, North and South America, the Middle and Far East. The companys new facility, due to open in Spring 2018 will feature the latest technology and fabrication facilities to facilitate growth and expansion.

Enterprising Barnsley worked closely with Balmoral Tanks in providing tailored business support. This support allowed the company to make informed decisions and help to:

· identify a range of sites within the borough for potential development

· introduced the company to prospective landowners and developers

· provide information on process and planning

· accelerate development

Once the product type has been agreed we will get to work on producing the tank. If required, we will carry out a site survey and prepare the groundworks and foundations for the project. We take nothing and no one for granted; do you feel your current supplier takes you for granted?

When considering your response to the wider question above, we ask you to weigh up these questions:

Do you feel your current manufacturer truly values your business?
Does your current manufacturer take time to understand what you need from them, not just what they want from you?
Do you ever receive credit for the revenue you create for them?
If you were starting from scratch, would you choose your current manufacturer?
Do you work with your current manufacturer purely out of habit rather than any driving business case, product innovation or other such motivation?

If your response to any of the first four questions is ‘no’, then it might be time to investigate other options.

Coveted NSF certification achieved by Balmoral Tanks

The certification covers drinking water system components and provides assurance that the product has been tested by one of the most respected independent certification organisations in the industry.

The NSF mark means that the product complies fully with stringent test requirements including periodic unannounced facility inspections and product testing to verify that the product continues to comply with the standard.

1. In one sentence – what do we do best?

2. What’s the driving mission or purpose behind Balmoral Tanks right now?

Our mission is simple: to deliver every project with care, professionalism and precision - on time, on budget and to the highest standards. From the very first enquiry to final installation, we aim to exceed expectations while supporting the vital sectors we serve.

3. What’s been the biggest milestone in the past 12 months?

One of the most exciting developments has been our expansion into the U.S. market, with a brand-new operations facility in Northeast Ohio.

This $2 million investment enables local production of our epoxy-coated steel tanks, strengthens customer relationships, reduces logistics costs, and supports the fast-growing U.S. biogas sector. It’s a key part of our wider £30 million investment programme in the tanks business since 2018, reflecting our ambition to scale globally while maintaining the same standards of quality and service that define us here in the UK.

Alongside this - as you may have seen on this article we published earlier in the year - we’ve also continued to invest in our UK operations, including almost £1 million in a Centriblast shot-blasting line, which has helped us improve efficiency and consistency across our manufacturing processes.

4. Any exciting developments on the horizon?

The launch of our U.S. business will remain a key focus. As the site ramps up, we expect to employ around 20 new team members, further embedding ourselves in a market with huge potential.

Back at home, we’re also committed to ongoing investment in people and innovation. Our ILM-accredited Leadership Academy continues to develop the next generation of Balmoral leaders, while our teams are delivering solutions for emerging markets such as anaerobic digestion, carbon capture, green energy storage and even water storage for data centres.

All of this forms part of our longer-term ambition to double turnover and reach £100m within the next five years, supported by our focus on innovation, service excellence and people development.

5. Tell us something surprising or little-known about us

We are the first manufacturing company in the world to be awarded the BSI Kitemark Certification for Customer Service and Complaints Management, meeting the rigorous standards of BS 8477 and BS ISO 10002.

Balmoral Tanks Welcomes Made in Group Members to Thurnscoe Site

Balmoral Tanks was delighted to welcome members of Made in Yorkshire to our Thurnscoe facility this week for an engaging Made in Yorkshire factory tour event. Bringing together manufacturers from across the region, the day provided a fantastic opportunity to open our doors to fellow manufacturers, share best practice and showcase the people and processes behind Balmoral’s continued growth.

The morning began with breakfast, informal networking and a warm welcome from our Managing Director, Allan Joyce, who introduced visitors to the Balmoral story, our growth journey and the strategic thinking that continues to shape the business.

The event also marked an important milestone for Balmoral Tanks. Allan shared that after just under three decades with the business, he will be stepping down from his role as Managing Director later this year. Welcoming the Made in Yorkshire community to Thurnscoe at this point in the company’s journey therefore felt particularly fitting.

During his tenure, Allan has played a central role in shaping Balmoral Tanks into the organisation it is today — overseeing periods of significant growth, expanding the company’s global reach and helping build the strong culture that continues to underpin the business. His long-standing support for the Made in Yorkshire network made it especially meaningful to host members at the site just weeks before his transition from the role.

Guests were also introduced to Paul Edwards, who has recently joined the business and will succeed Allan as Managing Director. Speaking to the group, Paul shared his enthusiasm for joining Balmoral and building on the strong foundations already in place across the organisation.

Strategy, Growth and Global Markets

The opening presentation gave visitors an overview of Balmoral’s strategy and growth over recent years. The business has experienced strong expansion, with revenue more than doubling between 2021 and 2025 and export sales increasing from £7 million to £24 million during the same period.

Allan outlined the strategic framework guiding Balmoral’s direction, built around four key priorities: service excellence, engaged people, ESG responsibility and productivity through technology.

As Allan explained, service is not viewed as a department within Balmoral but rather “an attitude that permeates the entire business.”

Members of the leadership team then expanded on different areas of the business. Operations Manager Jim Mann provided an overview of Balmoral’s two core coating technologies — glass-fused-to-steel and fusion bonded epoxy — helping attendees understand the manufacturing processes they would later see during the factory tour.

Sales Director Jonathan Smith also shared insights into the global markets Balmoral continues to serve and expand into, highlighting opportunities across sectors including aquaculture, fertiliser storage and other infrastructure markets aligned with sustainability and environmental regulation.

Inside the Thurnscoe Facility

Following the presentations, attendees were split into smaller groups and taken on a guided tour of the Thurnscoe manufacturing facility, giving visitors the opportunity to see Balmoral’s operations first-hand and speak directly with the teams responsible for each stage of the process.

The tour moved through several key areas of the business — from sales and estimating through to design, manufacturing and finishing operations — offering a detailed look at how Balmoral transforms complex customer requirements into engineered storage solutions.

One area that generated particular interest was the company’s automated estimating system, developed internally and now capable of generating more than 500 quotations each month. The system produces detailed outputs including 3D models and is currently being trialled with a major customer to allow them to generate estimates independently when required.

Members also saw how Balmoral continues to invest in productivity through technology, one of the organisation’s core strategic pillars. Across the factory floor, digital tools and automation are being introduced to improve safety, enhance efficiency and reduce the potential for human error.

Another key focus was Balmoral’s ongoing journey toward creating a paperless factory environment. Tablets are now used for inspections, production output recording and maintenance reporting, with further developments underway to digitise production records, warehouse picking and inventory tracking.

Keeping the tour groups small ensured each station could be explained clearly and openly, allowing visitors to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of Balmoral’s continuous improvement journey.

A Collective Effort

The event concluded with an open panel discussion and Q&A session, where Balmoral’s leadership team shared further insight into the company’s operations, growth strategy and sustainability initiatives.

Delivering an event like this is very much a team effort. From the colleagues on reception and within HR who coordinated registrations and hospitality, to the station guides and tour facilitators across the factory floor, and the leadership team who shared their insights during the presentations and panel session, the success of the day reflected the commitment and pride of the wider Balmoral team.

We would also like to thank the Made in Yorkshire team for bringing together such a strong group of manufacturers and creating the opportunity for meaningful conversation, collaboration and shared learning across the sector.

With plenty of insightful discussion, a good few laughs and genuine openness throughout the day, it was a pleasure to welcome the Made in Yorkshire community to Thurnscoe.
